The Universities Symposium at the Westport Folk & Bluegrass Festival in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, held June 7-9, 2024, was one of the recipients of the IBMA Foundation’s 2024 project grants.
The unique event was a partnership and collaboration of three academic institutions (two from the U.S. and one from Ireland) to research, explore, and promote the deep-rooted cultural connections between bluegrass, old-time, and Irish traditional music. Check out a video of students from Ireland and Tennessee playing music together HERE.
The symposium panel included Lee Bidgood (East Tennessee State University); Conor Caldwell (Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick, Ireland); Greg Reish (Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University); Natalie Zoe Weinstein (Warren Wilson College); Pete Ward (Durham University, U.K.); and artist/historian Rhiannon Giddens.
