Nathaniel Mitchell named Rosenberg Bluegrass Scholar

Sep 3, 2025 | News

Congratulations to Nathaniel Mitchell, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Delaware University, the 2025 recipient of the Rosenberg Bluegrass Scholar Award, sponsored this year by Paolo Dettwiler, a longtime supporter of the IBMA Foundation from Switzerland. Mitchell’s article, “On Meter and the Social Dynamics of Cueing in Bill Monroe’s ‘Muleskinner Blues'” was published last fall in the journal Music Theory Online and is based on a paper he presented previously as a PhD student. Read the article here.

The chair of the review committee said the article “made valuable contributions to understanding bluegrass music and Bill Monroe’s legacy (musical and otherwise). The paper was well researched and written, and made compelling and seamless connections between the musical and social aspects of Monroe’s performances. And the original interviews with former Blue Grass Boys added a lot.”

RETURN to the September 2025 issue of The Cornerstone.
