From Angelika Hernmarck
I’m pleased to share with you the report from the European Bluegrass Summit 2025, which took place February 28 – March 2, 2025, in Prague, Czech Republic. Thank you for your generous project grant, which made it possible for us to bring so many dedicated bluegrass advocates, organizers, and musicians together. Your commitment to strengthening the international bluegrass community is deeply appreciated on this side of the Atlantic, as well.
A Historic Reconnection
The 2025 Summit marked the first European Bluegrass Summit in nearly ten years, reconnecting and revitalizing our continent-wide community. More than 100 participants including musicians, association leaders, festival organizers, educators, and fans, traveled from across Europe and the United States to take part. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm, as old friendships were renewed and new collaborations were sparked.
Music at the Heart
Nine European bluegrass bands showcased, presenting the remarkable breadth of talent thriving across our countries. A special highlight was the European Kids on Bluegrass band, featuring teenagers and young adults from four different European countries. Their performance embodied the vitality and future of bluegrass in Europe, and stood as a testament to the success of youth engagement efforts that are being encouraged and supported across the continent.
Broad and Necessary Conversations
The Summit provided a platform for numerous structured discussions on key topics for the future of bluegrass in Europe, including:
*Youth involvement and education.
*Festival and association sustainability.
*Opportunities for transnational collaboration.
Preserving heritage while innovating for new audiences.
Alongside the formal sessions, informal meetings proved equally important. Over meals, jam sessions, and spontaneous conversations, a real community began to form—one that the European Bluegrass Music Association (EBMA) and the wider European scene can continue to build on.
Concrete Outcomes
The Summit was not just about dialogue; it was a catalyst for action. One important initiative that emerged was the creation of a steering group for the European Bluegrass Music Museum concept. This group, founded during the Summit itself, has already begun laying the groundwork for documenting and celebrating Europe’s unique contributions to bluegrass history. Other outcomes include renewed cooperation between national associations, the launch of a European Bluegrass Day (or week!), commitments to expand the Kids on Bluegrass Europe program, and the start of resource-sharing projects for festival organizers.
The Impact of the Foundation’s Support
The IBMA Foundation’s contribution to this Summit made possible a gathering that reconnected our community after a decade-long gap, showcased young and established talent, and launched initiatives that will shape the European bluegrass scene for years to come. Equally important, it reminded participants that Europe’s efforts are recognized and valued by the wider international bluegrass community.
Looking Ahead
We are confident that the seeds planted at the 2025 Summit will continue to grow. With the foundations now rebuilt, the EBMA and our community are well positioned to expand programs, strengthen partnerships, and ensure that bluegrass thrives across Europe. A next edition is planned for 6 – 8, March 2026. Y’all come! Once again, the board extends its thanks to the IBMA Foundation for believing in its work and for the essential role it has played in making the 2025 European Bluegrass Summit a success.
With sincere appreciation,
Angelika Hernmarck, Board member and treasurer
