Shultz Fund & Project Grant reports from China

Jul 1, 2025 | News

By Eric Shi

This video is part of China’s Bluegrass Journey, a project that I started in mid-March. This video we shot  at the beautiful Zhijiang Campus of Zhejiang University. Through China’s Bluegrass Journey, I traveled from Shanghai to different cities, looking for bluegrass enthusiasts and musicians in China. We created original bluegrass videos together and shared bluegrass music with more people here. Thanks to the IBMA Foundation’s Arnold Shultz Fund and Project Grant for supporting this project. Thank you for watching! Full recording, arrangement, and production © 2025 Eric Shi, music and lyrics by Eric Shi.

This video is from my second trip to Shanghai this year, from May 24th to June 1st. Tom is a great Mongolian mandolin player [and *Tuvan throat singer]. It was our first time playing together, and we were really happy! I am grateful for the support from the IBMA Foundation through their Project Grant and Arnold Shultz Fund Grant.

*IBMA Foundation Note:  Tuvan throat singing is a traditional vocal technique from Tuva, located in southern Siberia, north of Mongolia, and is culturally linked with Mongolian throat singing. It is traditionally sung outdoors to commune with nature but has been popularized internationally. It is often used in soundtracks and meditative music due to its haunting, resonant quality.

RETURN to the July 2025 issue of The Cornerstone.
