Gus Lovicott, Fletcher Bright and Bill Breen grant report

Nov 4, 2025 | News

The IBMA Foundation e-mailbox has been full during the past two months with reports from across the country and around the world.

North Carolina—
Gus Lovicott, who received funds from the Fletcher Bright Memorial Grant for Young Musicians and the Bill Breen Bluegrass Youth Education Grant, wrote: “Thank you for awarding me a music grant and giving me the opportunity to attend the Blue Ridge Banjo Camp. I had such a great time! I met a lot of awesome people and learned so much that will help me keep growing as a musician.

“As a bluegrass player from Austin, Texas, I don’t often get to be around other kids who play the banjo, so it was really cool to spend time with other young musicians who share the same passion.  I learned a lot at camp, like how to play backup during songs, try out different tunings, and change the tone of my banjo. I also really enjoyed Tony Trischka’s banjo class.  He’s an amazing teacher, and I picked up a lot from his sessions. I’m already planning to use what I learned at local bluegrass jams and in the bands I play with here in Austin. Thanks again for making this experience possible. I’m really grateful for the opportunity!”
