Spring academic conference schedules announced

Mar 27, 2026 | Bluegrass at California's Avenal State Prison

Spring is the time for the String Band Summit conference for bluegrass, old-time, and roots music to be held April 10-12, 2026, at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. Here’s a link for more information and the presentation schedule: String Band Summit – 2026

Supported in part by an IBMA Foundation project grant, The String Band Summit gathers artists, teachers, scholars, and other music industry stakeholders engaged in string band music across the Americas to explore string band traditions, histories, practices, instruments, and pedagogy, seeking to foster collaboration and understanding. The 5th annual SBS will be hosted by the Institute for Appalachian Music and Culture in the Department of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University April 10-12, 2026. The gathering will not have a regional theme, but will focus on bringing together people who perform, teach, study, and present string band music around, over, and through boundaries of genre, vocation, and geography.

The International Country Music Conference (ICMC) takes place May 28-30, 2026, at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Bluegrass and roots music presentations are included in the mix each year. Read more here: internationalcountrymusic.org.

On June 5, 2026, during the Westport Folk & Bluegrass Festival in Westport, Country Mayo, Ireland, an Academic Event will be held from 4-5 p.m. Check out an impressive slate of presenters and topics HERE.

All three conferences are highly recommended!
