Description: The focus of the acclaimed Wintergrass Youth Orchestra program is to bridge the gap between classical music and the aural/oral approach of traditional music. High school students will learn improvisation and ear training, and study traditional songs and styles. Their experience working with classical and traditional bluegrass instruments, different stylings and arrangements, and the juxtaposition of classical orchestra and folk ensembles will expand the breadth of their musical skills and broadens their perspectives.  Students from Seattle Pacific University will participate in the program, led by SPU’s orchestral conductor Chris Hanson. All of the high school and college students will convene for a culminating performance on Pocketgrass. Founded in 1994, The Wintergrass Youth Orchestra has received award-winning recognition from IBMA, CMA and the Grammys.
